Austrian Gold Ducats and European Coins

Austrian gold ducats present some of the most consistent investment-grade gold coins available today. The standard ducat weighs 3.5 grams at 98.6% fineness, a specification maintained from 1516 through the modern era. Early examples feature St. Leopold holding a church model and pennant, while later issues show crowned imperial eagles with Austria-Burgundy shields on the breast.

Multiple ducat pieces command attention from serious collectors. The 6 ducat pieces from 1508 and 1516 show crowned busts facing right, weighing 21 grams each. Higher denominations like the 12 ducat (42 grams) and 20 ducat (70 grams) pieces from the early 1500s display armored figures of archdukes and emperors. The 20 ducat shows an emperor on horseback carrying a lance with flag, date below when present.

French gold francs, British sovereigns, and Swiss gold pieces follow similar patterns of consistent weight and purity. We regularly acquire these European gold coins from estates and collections throughout Morris County.

American Gold Eagles

Pre-1933 American gold eagles represent the backbone of numismatic gold collecting. The $20 Double Eagle, $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle each maintained specific weight standards. Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles from 1907-1933 are particularly sought after, as are the earlier Liberty Head designs.

Modern American Gold Eagles began production in 1986. These bullion coins contain one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, or tenth ounce of pure gold. The design mirrors the classic Saint-Gaudens motif but adds modern security features.

South African Krugerrands and World Gold

Krugerrands launched the modern bullion coin market in 1967. Each one-ounce coin contains exactly one troy ounce of gold alloyed with copper for durability. The design has remained essentially unchanged, featuring Paul Kruger on the obverse and a springbok antelope on the reverse.

Mexican gold pesos, particularly the 50 peso Centenario, offer substantial gold content at 1.2057 troy ounces per coin. Canadian Gold Maple Leafs provide 99.99% purity, among the purest gold coins produced by any government mint.

Having evaluated thousands of gold coins over the years, we understand the difference between bullion value and numismatic premium. Date, mintmark, and condition determine whether a coin trades at melt value or commands a collector premium. This knowledge proves essential when liquidating inherited collections or individual pieces.
